February: The Month of Love

February often brings a focus on love, with Valentine’s Day reminding us of relationships, affection, and all the emotions in between. For college women, this month can stir up everything from excitement to uncertainty. However, I think we should focus on a different kind of love, a love that never fails.

We live in a world where love can feel conditional, and I find great comfort in knowing that there is a love that is true, steady, and unchanging. “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” – 1 John 4:10. Whether you’re spending this February in a relationship or not, be reminded that you are held in love by a Heavenly Father whose love knows no bounds.

In college, it can feel hard to show love to the people we meet. Often, we are distracted by our own thoughts, classes, and social lives, and we forget to show love to others. I encourage you this month to be intentional in the ways you show love to others. Whether it’s your best friends, roommates, peers, or even people you encounter randomly, remember that everyone is deserving of love and kindness.

We also often forget to show love to ourselves. Comparison is something many of us are familiar with, but we need to remember what Psalm 139:14 says: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This February, be thankful for all the gifts you’ve been given, and show yourself love for all that you have achieved.

“Love is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
