What Self Care Actually Looks Like in College

When we think about self-care, it's easy to picture face masks, slow mornings, and just relaxing. As college students, it probably won't look like this, and that's okay. It's a lot more realistic than what we see online, and it's what works best for you. In the middle of classes, involvement, friendships, and everything else college brings, self-care becomes less about perfection and more about consistency. It's not always aesthetic, but it is what keeps you grounded.

  • Showing Up For Yourself

    • The hardest part of life can sometimes be doing things you don't want to do. This is going to class when you want to stay in bed, starting an assignment you've been putting off, or keeping other commitments you made to yourself.

  • Taking Care of Your Body

    • College schedules can get busy fast, and it's easy to forget basic needs. Self-care is making time to eat real meals, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep when you can. It's also finding ways to move your body- whether it's a full workout, a walk between classes, or just a basic stretch or yoga session.

  • Recognizing When You Need Rest

    • Not every day has to be productive or full of a calendar. Self-care is recognizing when you are burnt out and allowing yourself to take a step back. That might look like a night in, going to bed earlier than usual, or just giving yourself the day off from a hardcore workout to take a relaxing walk.

  • Staying on top of the small things

    • Sometimes, self-care is doing the things no one considers, but you must do them. It could be laundry, cleaning up your room, responding to emails, or sitting down to organize your schedule for the week. These small actions will help you in the future from stress.

  • Leaning into your support system

    • One of the most important things during college is your community. Caring for yourself can literally mean going to those around you when you need it. You might not think you need help from others, but talking about your life stress with a friend can be relieving in ways you might not know.

Self-care isn't always perfect, and it won't always look like a movie or your Pinterest board. It's about balance, awareness, and making difficult choices that support your well-being in the long run. It looks different for everyone, and it can change every week. What matters most is doing what makes you feel your best! So give yourself space and allow for time and rest this week.
